Ukumbi* is a Finnish non-governmental organisation established in 2007. Our mission is to collaborate with communities from the global majority to co-create architectural solutions that address local needs and aspirations. Ukumbi believes architecture is a transformative tool that fosters agency, builds capacity, and contributes to equitable development. We work in partnership with women, children, and young people in communities facing systemic challenges, enabling them to shape their own environments, including homes, schools, and community spaces. Through collective action and shared knowledge, these projects not only create vital physical structures but also reinforce cultural identity, dignity, and self-determination. Ukumbi’s architectural approach is rooted in respect for local expertise and practices. By integrating traditional techniques and customs throughout the design and construction processes, we ensure projects reflect and strengthen the cultural fabric of the community. We prioritise collaboration with local artisans and volunteers, fostering capacity building and ownership at every stage. Sustainability is at the core of Ukumbi’s work. We prioritise the use of locally sourced, renewable, and recycled materials to reduce environmental impact and support circular economy principles. By adopting low-carbon construction methods and ecologically conscious designs, we aim to create spaces that are resilient and sustainable for generations to come. With your support, Ukumbi continues to enable communities to build not just structures, but the foundations of empowerment and sustainable futures. 2009 Ukumbi received the Finnish State Award for Arts.
